Convert PDF to Word (DOCX) online

Turn PDFs into editable Word documents — with the text, layout and images preserved as closely as possible.

PDF to Word converts a PDF into a .docx file that opens in Microsoft Word, LibreOffice Writer, WPS, Google Docs and any modern word processor. The conversion is meant for editing — for example, updating a report you no longer have the source of, or extracting a paragraph without retyping it.

The tool uses the pdf2docx library, which reconstructs paragraphs, tables and images from the PDF's page layout. Simple documents (letters, reports, articles) convert with high fidelity. Documents with heavy design elements — magazine layouts, densely-packed spreadsheets, mathematical formulae — may need cleanup after conversion.

How to use it

  1. 1Upload the PDF you want to convert.
  2. 2Press Convert to Word.
  3. 3The .docx file downloads automatically. Open it in your word processor.
  4. 4Review the result. Complex layouts sometimes need small fixes; text is almost always accurate.

Real-world use cases

  • Update a résumé or contract you have as a PDF but not the original DOCX.
  • Extract quotable text from a research paper without retyping.
  • Localise a marketing brochure into another language, keeping the layout as a starting point.
  • Import a PDF into a document-management workflow that expects editable Word files.

Supported formats & limits

Input: PDF (encrypted PDFs must be unlocked first). Output: DOCX. Scanned/image-only PDFs need OCR before this tool can extract meaningful text — use the OCR PDF tool first.

Privacy

Your uploaded file is written to a temporary folder on our server, processed, and deleted by the operating system as soon as the request finishes — typically within seconds. Nothing is stored in our database. Traffic is encrypted over HTTPS.

Frequently asked questions

Will the layout be pixel-perfect after conversion?▾

For plain text-and-image documents, usually yes. For designed documents (magazines, brochures, forms), small differences are common — spacing, table borders, or column widths might need a nudge. The text content itself is preserved accurately.

Does it work on scanned PDFs?▾

Scanned PDFs are essentially images. If the pages don't contain a text layer, run OCR PDF first to add one, then convert to Word.

Are fonts embedded in the Word file?▾

The DOCX references fonts by name. If the exact font used in the PDF is installed on your computer, it will look identical; otherwise Word will substitute a similar font.

Are there size limits?▾

The tool works with PDFs up to a few hundred pages. Very large scanned PDFs may take longer to process.

Do headers, footers and page numbers survive the conversion?▾

Standard headers and footers convert into Word's header/footer regions where possible. Custom running-heads (like chapter titles baked into the layout) usually convert as regular text at the top of each page — you may want to move them into a real header in Word.
