PDF Word Count analyses the text layer of a PDF and returns four numbers editors, students, freelance writers and researchers actually care about: how many pages, how many words, how many characters (with and without spaces), and roughly how long it takes to read.
Word counts are computed using the same whitespace-splitting logic every professional editor uses, so the numbers match what you'd see in Word or Google Docs. Reading time uses the widely-accepted 230-words-per-minute comfortable adult reading speed — the same benchmark Medium and similar platforms use for their "5 min read" estimates.

Frequently asked questions
How is reading time calculated?▾
Words divided by 230 words per minute — the widely-accepted comfortable adult reading speed for prose. Technical content (research papers, legal text) is usually read slower, so treat the number as a lower bound for those.
Why does my scanned PDF show 0 words?▾
Scans have no text layer — the tool cannot count words in an image. Run OCR PDF first, which adds a text layer to the scan, then run Word Count on the OCR'd copy.
Does the count include headers, footers and page numbers?▾
Yes — every character on every page is included, since PDF doesn't reliably distinguish repeating headers from body content. For editors who want body-only counts, extract to text first, delete the recurring lines, then count the result manually.
Is there a page limit?▾
No hard cap. Files up to ~100 MB process comfortably. Very large scanned books (OCR'd) may take a few seconds while the tool walks every page.
Do I need to sign up to use this?▾
No — like every other PDF Hub tool, this is 100% free with no account required. Uploaded files are processed in memory and deleted immediately after the response is returned.
